BETHANY, W. Va. (September 28) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team dropped its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) road opener at Bethany 2-1 on Saturday.
The Jackets move to 4-3-1 on the season and 0-2 in league play. Bethany rises to 4-3-2, 1-1 PAC.
The Bison struck first in the 15th minute as Bethany worked up the right side and sent a cross into the 18-yard box. Bethany's Brionna Bash volleyed the cross back to the right post and in to give the hosts a 1-0 edge.
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) answered with a goal of her own in the 26th minute off a corner kick.
Brooklyn Loveland (New Cumberland, W. Va. / Oak Glen) served the ball into the box, where Mohrbacher weaved through defenders and headed in her third goal of the season to knot the game at one.
Bethany re-took the lead less than three minutes later as Jada Benjamin blasted a shot from 27-yards out into the upper right corner.
The Bison's 2-1 lead held until halftime as the Jackets had a pair of corner kicks in the final 15 minutes of the half but were unable to generate a shot on target.
A foul on the Jackets inside the 18-yard box resulted in a penalty kick for Bethany in the 52nd minute. Freshman goalkeeper
Alex Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) made a diving save to her right to preserve the one-goal deficit. The Jackets then staved off multiple Bethany corner kicks without conceding another goal.
Hailey Gilchrest (Hanover, Va. / Hanover) had a look on net on a counterattack, but her grounded shot was saved in the 61st minute.
Sutton Clark (Ashburn, Va. / Stone Bridge) had several shots in the 65th and 69th minutes that missed the mark.
Waynesburg's final scoring chance game in the 89th minute with
Demaree Livingston (Willow Grove, Pa. / Upper Dublin) hitting the left post. Bethany was able to clear the ball and hold on for the 2-1 win.
Bethany finished with a 13-10 edge in shots an da 5-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Jackets had six of the game's 10 corner kicks.
Alexus Greenlief (Chester, W. Va. / Oak Glen) made two saves in almost 22 minute of action.
Alex Francus saved the penalty kick goal in the second half.
The Jackets host Allegheny on Wednesday evening.
