Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Freshmen power Men’s Soccer past La Roche 2-1

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (September 7) – A header by freshman Noah Biser (Wake Forest, N.C. / Wake Forest) in the 89th minute lifted the Waynesburg University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at La Roche on Saturday afternoon.

The Jackets rise to 2-0 while La Roche falls to 0-2.

After 35 scoreless minutes, La Roche opened the scoring after a Jacket giveaway in its own end. Two passes after gaining possession, the Redhawks ripped a shot off a defender and into the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 edge.

Waynesburg answered with a tally less than five minutes. After a La Roche turnover around midfield, Sarpong Kwabiah (Odenton, Md. / Meade) shepherded the ball past the midfield line and into the attacking third. He played a pass ahead to Liam Mowbray (Cumberland, Md. / Allegany), who fired a shot around the charging Redhawk keeper for the equalizer.

The two teams went into the half tied at one and played over 40 minutes of scoreless soccer to start the second half. Kwabiah lined up a free kick on the Waynesburg side of midfield and placed the ball on the right corner of the six-yard box where Biser slipped behind his defender and sent a header over the leaping goalkeeper for the game-winning goal.

Waynesburg outshot La Roche 12-9 on the day and had a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. The Jackets recorded seven corner kicks, compared to four for La Roche.

Seth Massotti (Douglas, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian) led Waynesburg with three shots on target. Kwabiah had a hand in both Waynesburg scores and was credited with an assist on the game-winner.

Jacket goalkeeper Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) made three saves in the win.

The Jackets take on Pitt-Greensburg in their home opener on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
