Women’s Basketball tangles with first-place W&J

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (January 11) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hung tough in the first quarter with first-place Washington & Jefferson but fell 80-54 at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

The Jackets fall to 7-7 on the season and 2-7 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. W&J, who received votes in the most recent D3hoops.com poll, moves to 13-2 and stays unbeaten in conference play at 10-0.

The Presidents began the game with a 9-2 run before the Jackets settled in. Waynesburg answered with a 9-3 run with baskets by Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W. Va. / Morgantown), Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) and a trey by Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding) to pull within one (12-11). Jaden Sturm's (Clarksburg, W.Va. / Robert C. Byrd) three with 1:53 left in the quarter tied the game at 14 before W&J scored the final basket of the quarter to lead 16-14 at the end of the period.

W&J outscored Waynesburg 20-6 in the second quarter to build a 36-20 halftime lead.

After trailing by 18 (46-28) midway through the third quarter, Waynesburg scored seven-straight points, four from Mohrbacher, to bring the margin to 46-35. The Jackets however were unable to cut the deficit to single digits and the Presidents used a 12-0 fourth quarter run to pull away and secure their 10th conference win.

Mohrbacher posted a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead Waynesburg in both categories. Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) had 10 points and seven boards. McFadden made three three-pointers on her way to 10 points.

After making a dozen threes on Wednesday against Franciscan, Waynesburg shot 5-of-23 from deep while W&J made 10-of-25. The Presidents won the rebounding battle (45-40) and turnover margin (14-9) by five.

The Jackets host Grove City on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
