Women's soccer edges Allegheny 1-0

Mittendorf's penalty kick goal in the 84th minute powers Jackets to PAC victory

MEADVILLE, Pa. (October 1) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team grabbed its second-straight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win after a late penalty kick goal from senior midfielder Reagan Mittendorf (Bluffton, Ohio / Bluffton) against Allegheny. That tally led the way to a 1-0 victory against the Gators.

The Yellow Jackets (8-1-1, 2-0-1) and Allegheny (2-6-3, 1-1-1) remained scoreless throughout the first half, despite the Jackets leading in shots 12-6 (4-3 SOG).

Waynesburg's first shot on goal came in the second minute courtesy of a header by freshman midfielder Miracle Hershey (Lebanon County, Pa. / New Covenant Christian). Two from freshman defender Gracie Smith (Monroe, Ohio / Monroe) came in the 25th and 45th minutes, respectively, and the last was provided by Mittendorf in the 38th minute.

The second half was shaping up to be similar to the first, with multiple shots on goal but nothing finding the net. The second half saw three from Mittendorf, two from Hershey and one from junior midfielder Hailey Gilchrest (Hanover, Va. / Hanover).

The game-winning goal came in the 84th minute, when Mittendorf cashed in her attempt to the low-right side corner of the net.

Junior goalkeeper Lex Greenlief (Chester, W. Va. / Oak Glen) provided nine saves on the night to preserve her fifth-straight shutout.

The Jackets outshot the Gators 28-20 (12-10 SOG) and had six of the game's seven corner kicks.

Waynesburg's win extended its current unbeaten streak to five games.

The Jackets will stay on the road on Saturday, Oct. 4, when they travel to PAC rival Washington & Jefferson. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
