Men's wrestling heads to Washington & Jefferson Invitational

Jessie Orbin takes second at 174; Fleming third at heavyweight

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Nov. 8) – The Waynesburg University men's wrestling team traveled to its first tournament of the season, which was Saturday's Washington & Jefferson Invitational. A pair of top three finishes highlighted the Yellow Jackets' 16th-place team performance.
 
Junior Jessie Orbin (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) wrestled his way into the finals at 174 pounds before settling for second place. He fell to the bracket's top seed, who is currently ranked number two in the country according to D3Wrestle.com.
 
Orbin, the two seed at the weight class, opened his day with a forfeit, before pinning Lycoming's Devon Greene in 2:16 to reach the semifinals. The Yellow Jacket standout outlasted Gettysburg's third-seeded Ethan Composto 4-1 to reach the title tilt, which he dropped to Lycoming's returning national qualifier Nolen Zeigler.
 
Junior heavyweight Austin Fleming (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg) opened his run with a 5-0 victory over Fairmont State's Tyler Carson and followed that up with a pin in 4:32 over Lycoming's Howard Brambley. The Jacket big man qualified for the semifinals by outlasting Penn State Behrend's Matt Caldwell to the tune of a 7-3 decision.
 
Fleming squared off with the bracket's top seed, Gettysburg's Simon Taylor. Fleming took the bout the distance, but Taylor managed to put together a win by decision to knock Fleming into the third-place bout.
 
Fleming ended his day on a high note by pinning third-seeded Marc Richardson of Southern Virginia in 3:44 to take the bronze.
 
Sophomore Ryland Parker (Ravenal, S.C. / Ashley Ridge) picked up a 10-1 major decision victory of Washington & Jefferson's Vincent Coleman before being knocked into consolations by the top seed.
 
Junior Brayden Barbao (Donora, Pa. / Ringgold) opened his day by pinning Anthony Coukary of Lycoming, before being dropped into wrestle-backs by the weight class's eventual champion and being eliminated.
 
Waynesburg is off until Saturday, Nov. 15, when it travels to Alfred, N.Y., to take part in the Alfred State Tri. Start time is scheduled for 9 a.m.
