WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec .20) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team wrapped up the 2025 portion of its season by playing its seventh-straight home game on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets closed out the year on a high note by leading for the vast majority of a 74-61 victory over Penn State Altoona.
The triumph snapped Waynesburg's (4-6) brief two-game losing streak. The loss was the second-straight for the Lions (6-4), who started the year by winning six of their first eight games.
Altoona opened the game by scoring four of the first five points. The Jackets rebounded to take the lead thanks to a 7-0 spurt that featured baskets from senior
Clara-Paige Miller (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central), junior
Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) and sophomore
Macie Justice (Washington, Pa. / Trinity).
The Jackets never trailed from that point on and ended the first quarter with an 18-12 advantage.
Back-to-back field goals by senior
Tori Wesolowski (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) to open the second quarter pushed the home team ahead 22-12. Altoona recovered to win the period 18-16 and head into the locker room trailing 34-30.
Any hopes of a Lion comeback were dashed in the third quarter, during which Waynesburg outscored the opposition 25-14. The Orange and Black built leads as large as 20 points on multiple occasions, before heading to the fourth up 59-44.
Altoona whittled its deficit down to as few as 10 points in the game's final minutes, but a 9-0 run put the Jackets ahead 74-55 with 91 seconds showing on the clock, allowing them to lock up the win.
Waynesburg continued its theme of balanced offensive success as five Jackets tallied between 10 and 17 points on the day. Henkins led the way by tying for the game high with 17 points, most of which came on four made three pointers in eight tries. Miller and senior
Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) logged 14 points each and tallied 11 and eight rebounds, respectively. Friday added four assists to her day.
Wesolowski and junior
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) completed the quintet with 10 points each. Mohrbacher further helped out the offense with a game-high five assists.
Speaking of passing the basketball, the Jackets doubled up Penn State Altoona with 17 helpers to the Lions' nine.
Waynesburg is off until Saturday, Jan. 3, when it rings in the new year with its final non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game of the season. The Jackets will hit the road to face Pitt Greensburg for a 2 p.m. contest.
