Women’s Basketball begins playoff push with win over Westminster

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (February 8) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team used a 29-point third quarter to separate from Westminster on route to a 76-61 victory in the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets move to 11-10 on the season and 6-10 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Waynesburg sits three games back of Bethany in the league standings with four games to play. Westminster falls to 3-18, 3-13. The win marks the Jackets' first sweep of the Titans since the 2017-18 campaign.

Macie Justice (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) hit two first quarter three-pointer and a late three-point play by Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) helped Waynesburg carry at 13-10 lead into the second quarter.

A pair of treys by Clara-Paige Miller (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) in the second quarter and two baskets by Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W. Va. / Calvary Christian Academy) to open and close the period had Waynesburg leading 27-18 at the half. 

The Jackets shot 11-for-13 from the field in a 25-9 spurt that lasted almost six minutes in the third quarter. Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W. Va. / Morgantown) had eight points, Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding) drained two threes and Dayton had two layups in the run that ended with Waynesburg leading 52-27.

Westminster sank six three-pointers in the final 13-plus minutes of regulation to bring the final margin to 76-61 Jackets.

Henkins led a trio of Jackets in double-figures with 15 points. Dayton Had 13 points and five rebounds. Miller finished with 13 points and eight boards. Friday had six points but led Waynesburg with 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Waynesburg finished plus-nine in the rebounding column (50-41) and outscored Westminster 36-22 in the paint. The Jackets made 10 threes at 35.7 percent.

Waynesburg hosts Saint Vincent on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m.
