PITTSBURGH, Pa. (March 17) – The Waynesburg University softball team had its eight-game winning streak halted but secured a doubleheader split at Carlow on Monday evening. The Celtics took a 6-3 win in game one before the Yellow Jackets bounced back with a 14-6 victory in game two.
Waynesburg moves to 11-2 on the season while Carlow stands at 2-8.
Game 1 – Carlow 6, Waynesburg 3
The Celtics' Megan Pollinger put the Celtics ahead 3-0 after three innings with a two-run home run in the first inning and a solo shot in the third.
Waynesburg answered with a run in the fifth on a groundout but left a pair of runners stranded on base. Carlow grew its lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth with three runs, two unearned.
Meysa Heitmann (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) tripled in
Dilyn Roberts (Sellersburg, Indiana / Henryville) and scored on a sacrifice fly in the seventh to bring the margin to 6-3 but the Jackets did not put any more baserunners on as the Celtics became the first NCAA Division III team to defeat Waynesburg this season.
Heitmann had two hits, tripled, drove in two and scored once.
Autumn Stemple (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) took the setback after allowing five earned runs in four innings.
Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay-Battelle) allowed once earned run in two innings.
Game 2 – Waynesburg 14, Carlow 6
The Jackets built a 9-2 lead in game two after scoring two in the first, three in the second and four runs in the fourth. Wilson drove in runs in the first, second and fourth innings while
Sydney Petrowski (Uniontown, Pa. / Connellsville) had RBI singles in the first and second innings. Three of Waynesburg's four runs in the fourth were unearned thanks to a pair of Carlow miscues.
The Celtics pulled back to a 9-5 margin with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth. In the fifth inning, a pair walks brought the tying run to the on-deck circle before Wilson ended the inning with a groundout.
Carlow crept closer, adding a run in the sixth with a walk and two singles to make the score 9-6. The Celtics had runners on the corners and the tying run at the plate before Wilson coaxed a popout back to the pitcher's circle to halt the threat.
Heitmann provided an insurance run for the Jackets with a two-out RBI double in the seventh to score
Breanna Rice (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown). After consecutive walks, Waynesburg broke the game open with back-to-back two-run singles by Petrowski and
Alyssa Rager (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) to push the Jacket lead to 14-6.
Wilson went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, walk, three RBI and four runs scored. Petrowski and Rager had three hits apiece with Petrowski driving in four runs and Rager knocking in three. Heitmann had three hits, doubled and scored three times.
Grace Higgins (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) notched two hits, two walks, tripled and scored four times.
Wilson got the win in the circle to move to rise to 6-0 on the season. She struck out six and allowed five earned runs on nine hits with five walks in the complete game effort.
The Jackets finished with 16 hits and 14 runs, both the second-highest single game total for both offensive categories this season.
