WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 26) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team earned its first Presidents' Athletic Conference win of the season with a 6-1 victory over Thiel at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility on Wednesday.
The Yellow Jackets are riding a two-game winning streak, the first for the squad since 2022, and now sit at 2-3, 1-1 PAC. Thiel falls to 0-5, 0-2 PAC.
The Jackets took the doubles point with victories in the second and third flights.
Josh DeFries (East Aurora, N.Y. / East Aurora) and
Andres Rojas (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brashear) combined for a 6-2 win at second doubles and
Tyler Gordon (Strongsville, Ohio / OHDELA) and
Thomas Torcaso (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) were 6-1 winners at No. 3 doubles.
Waynesburg won five of six singles matchups to walk away with the PAC win. Torcaso won in straight sets at sixth singles and Gordon won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
Rojas was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at third singles and DeFries won in a super tiebreaker 6-1, 3-6, 10-1 at third singles.
Ethan Clawson (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) won at top singles after rallying to a 7-5 win the first set and his opponent retired early in the second.
Sam Norris (Natrona Heights, Pa. / Highlands) was edged at second singles after winning the first set 6-0 and dropping the second 7-5. In the super tiebreaker, he was edge 10-6.
Waynesburg heads to Washington & Jefferson tomorrow for another PAC match.
