Softball takes down Bay Path and Grove City

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 4) – The Waynesburg University softball team posted another 2-0 day with a run-rule victory over Bay Path and a walk-off win over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) member Grove City at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday.

The Yellow Jackets stormed to an 18-1 run-rule victory over Bay Path in their opener. Against Grove City, Waynesburg scored in the bottom of the seventh to edge the Wolverines 3-2.

The Jackets are riding a five-game winning streak and move to 7-1 on the season.

Game 1 – Waynesburg 18, Bay Path 0 (5 Innings)

Waynesburg set season-highs across the board in runs, hits and RBI against the Wildcats. The Jackets scored two runs in the first and fourth innings and had seven runs in both the second and third innings.

Meysa Heitmann (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and there runs scored. Dilyn Roberts (Sellersburg, Indiana / Henryville) also was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Bella DeMark (Carnegie, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) was 2-for-2 with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored. Breanna Rice (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) added two hits and two RBI and Grace Higgins (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) had two hits and scored twice.

Pressley Meadows (Annapolis, Ohio / Edison) got the start in the circle and collected her first win as a Jacket. She allowed one earned run on one hit in four innings. She struck out five and walked two. Madison Baker (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong) worked a scoreless fifth inning.

Game 2 – Waynesburg 3, Grove City 2

The spring break edition of the Jackets and the Wolverines does not count towards the PAC standings. The two teams will meet for a conference doubleheader in Grove City on March 29.

The Wolverines scored an earned run in the third to go ahead 1-0. The Jackets took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI double by Alyssa Rager (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and pinch runner Madie Cicero (Willowick, Ohio / Eastlake North) scoring on a wild pitch.

Grove City tied the game in the top of the seventh on a throwing error. Waynesburg answered with the game-deciding run in the bottom of the inning.

Heitmann led off the home half of the seventh with a base hit. Roberts walked and a groundout put runners on second and third with one out. Rice hit a ground ball to second and Heitmann slid under the attempted tag as the Jackets won 3-2 on the fielder's choice.

Meadows started in the circle for Waynesburg and allowed one unearned run in 3.1 innings. Autumn Stemple (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) earned the win in relief after limiting the Wolverines to one unearned run on two hits over the final 3.2 innings.

Heitmann and Mackenzie Kearns (Elizabeth, Pa. / Elizabeth Forward) each had two hits for Waynesburg.

Waynesburg takes on Saint Elizabeth and Rosemont tomorrow morning in South Carolina.
