MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 5) – Senior pitcher
Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay-Battelle) struck out 13 batters to set the program's career strikeouts record as the Waynesburg University softball team defeated Saint Elizabeth 7-0 on Wednesday morning.
The Yellow Jackets ran their winning streak to six games and moved to 8-1 on the season with the win. Saint Elizabeth entered the contest on a five-game streak of their own and fell to 5-1. Waynesburg started a game with Rosemont following the Saint Elizabeth contest but it was abandoned due to rain in the fourth inning.
Wilson, who started the day tied for the program's all-time strikeouts record with 370, struck out the side in the first inning to break the record.
Wilson helped herself throughout the day at the plate as she knocked an RBI single in the second inning and a run-scoring triple in the fourth as Waynesburg led 2-0 after five innings.
In the sixth, Wilson knocked in the first run of a five-run with a single to left.
Grace Higgins (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) scored on a fielder's choice before
Meysa Heitmann (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) mashed a three-run triple to put the Jackets ahead 7-0.
The Eagles had two runners on in the sixth and loaded the bases in the seventh but Wilson worked out of both jams without allowing a run. All three outs in the bottom of the seventh came via strikeout as Wilson secured her 18th career shutout.
Wilson is Waynesburg's career leader in wins (50), strikeouts (383) and earned run average (1.58). Her 13 punchouts are the second-most in a single game in her storied career. She allowed four hits and four walks in the shutout. At the plate, Wilson went 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs batted in.
Higgins went 4-for-4 with there runs scored. Heitmann had two hits, a triple and three RBI.
Waynesburg concludes its spring break trip tomorrow against Brooklyn (9 a.m.) and Lancaster Bible (11 a.m.).
