MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 6) – The Waynesburg University softball team concluded its trip to Myrtle Beach on a nine-game winning streak as the Yellow Jackets downed Brooklyn and Lancaster Bible in their spring break finale on Thursday.
The Jackets secured a 9-1 run-rule victory over Brooklyn and closed the trip with a 6-1 triumph over Lancaster Bible. Waynesburg rises to 10-1 on the season.
Game 1 – Waynesburg 9, Brooklyn 1 (5 Innings)
A 3-1 ballgame after three innings turned into a run-rule victory for the Jackets thanks to a five-run fifth inning.
Meysa Heitmann (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) cranked a leadoff home run for Waynesburg in the bottom of the first and the Jackets extended their lead to 3-0 on a sacrifice fly and RBI groundout.
Brooklyn recorded its first hit of the game in the third inning and it was RBI single after a pair of walks. Waynesburg starter
Autumn Stemple (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) limited the damage to one run as she coaxed a flyout to retire the side.
Tori Foust (Blairsville, Pa. / River Valley) doubled to lead off the fourth and her pinch runner scored on a fielder's choice to push Waynesburg's lead to 4-1.
Heitmann tripled to lead off the fifth and scored on
Grace Higgins' (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) sacrifice bunt.
Sydney Petrowski (Uniontown, Pa. / Connellsville) ripped a two-run double down the left field line and scored the mercy rule triggering run on a wild pitch.
Waynesburg outhit Brooklyn 11-2 in the ballgame and had four extra-base hits.
Heitmann went 2-3 with a home run, triple, RBI and two runs scored. Higgins, Petrowski and
Bella DeMark (Carnegie, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) each had two hits.
Stemple picked up the five-inning win with three innings with no baserunners allowed. She struck out 10 and allowed one earned run on two hits with three walks.
Game 2 – Waynesburg 6, Lancaster Bible 1
Game two starting pitcher
Sydney Wilson (Pentress, W.Va. / Clay-Battelle) struck out 11 in a complete-game win. She limited the Chargers to one run on four hits and three walks. Higgens went 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Breanna Rice (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) drove in two runs and Heitmann had two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
Lancaster Bible scored the first run of the in the top of the third inning. The Jackets scored twice in the bottom of the frame as Heitmann had an RBI triple and Rice notched a run-scoring single to give Waynesburg a 2-1 lead.
Higgins scored on a wild pitch in the fifth and then knocked a two-run double in the sixth. Rice lifted a sacrifice fly in the sixth to put the Jackets ahead by the final margin of 6-1.
