Baseball defeated in PAC doubleheader against Bethany

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 10) – The Waynesburg University baseball team was defeated twice in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against Bethany at the Waynesburg University Baseball & Softball Complex on Thursday afternoon.

The Bison (9-15, 4-8 PAC) served as the home team for both games of the doubleheader since the game was originally set to be played at Bethany. The Bison led throughout game one and held on for a 6-2 victory.  The Yellow Jackets (5-22, 1-9 PAC) scored the opening run in game two but Bethany scored five runs in the third and seventh innings in a 13-3 run-rule victory.

Game 1 – Bethany 6, Waynesburg 2

Bethany used three hits to plate one run in the first. The Jackets tied the game at one with Dalton Mount (Sykesville, Md. / Westminster) knocking in Jordan Mosley (St. Albans, W.Va. / St. Albans) in the third with a looping single over a drawn-in infield.

The Bison took a 3-1 lead with a two-run triple in the third but starting pitcher Ryan Opfer (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) left the runner stranded with a groundout, strikeout and flyout to close the frame.

Bethany's used a pair of doubles and three singles to tack on three runs to go ahead 6-1.

Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) drove in Mount with a two-out single RBI single in the eighth. The Jackets had two runners on but a successful Bethany pickoff at first base ended the threat.

Waynesburg put a pair of runners on in the ninth but could not bring them home as Bethany held on for the 6-2 win.

Connor Hamrick (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) and Mount had two hits apiece.

Opfer held Bethany to three runs over the first six innings but exited the game after allowing six earned runs on 12 hits in seven innings. Zach Scibelli (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) tossed a scoreless eighth.

Game 2 – Bethany 13, Waynesburg 3

Bethany scored in bunches to take game two. The Bison knocked five hits to score three runs in the second. They took advantage of several walks and a hit batter to plate five runs on three hits in the third and took advantage of two Waynesburg errors in a five-run seventh to end the ballgame.

Waynesburg knocked three base hits in the top of the first inning and scored the opening run with a single by Giraffa. Aidan Williams (Shaler, Pa. / Shaler) notched an RBI double in the third and Jordan Mosley (St. Albans, W.Va. / St. Albans) lifted a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

The Jackets used four different pitchers in the game and Bethany outhit the Jackets 16-7.

Engelmore had two hits and a run scored. Mount and Williams each doubled.

The Jackets play their fifth and sixth games in four days in another PAC doubleheader at Westminster on Saturday.
