NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (April 12) – The Waynesburg University baseball team used a four-run eighth inning to secure a split in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Westminster on Saturday afternoon.
The Titans (13-13, 8-4 PAC) earned a 6-1 win in game one behind a complete game effort by starting pitcher Kolton Banfi. The Yellow Jackets (6-23, 2-10 PAC) snapped an eight-game losing skid with four runs in the eighth inning delivering Waynesburg to a 6-4 triumph in game two.
Game 1 – Westminster 6, Waynesburg 1
While Waynesburg was playing its fifth game in four days, Westminster was playing its first game in over a week. Banfi, the Titans ace, remained unbeaten on the season with his complete game effort has he limited the Jackets to one run on six hits.
Westminster built a 3-0 lead after three innings with a run coming home on a wild pitch, an RBI triple and the runner on third scoring after the triple.
Garrett Comer (St. Albans, W.Va. / St. Albans) put the Jackets on the board with a run-scoring double in the fourth, however that was all Waynesburg mustered in the ballgame. Westminster tacked on three more runs, all with two outs, to take the first game 6-1.
Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) had two hits and scored Waynesburg's lone run.
Matthew Corte-Gaskill (Wake Forest, N.C. / Knightdale) started on the mound for the Jackets and allowed three earned runs over five innings.
Dalton Lucey (Waynesburg, Pa. / West Greene) pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
Game 2 – Waynesburg 6, Westminster 4
Waynesburg rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to topple the Titans in the nightcap. An error allowed Comer to reach base to leadoff the inning and score on a base hit by Engelmore.
Jordan Mosley (St. Albans, W.Va. / St. Albans) and
Hunter Mamie (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) knocked RBI singles to tie the game and give the Jackets a 5-4 lead.
Connor Hamrick (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) beat out a possible double play to allow for an insurance run to score.
Alex Nicholson (Cortland, Ohio / Mathews) posted scoreless eighth and ninth innings to secure a save.
Mike McCready (Greensburg, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic) was credited with the win after allowing one run over two innings of relief. Engelmore was Waynesburg's starter and held Westminster to three earned in five innings.
Waynesburg scored on an error in the second and Mosley had an RBI single in the seventh. Westminster built its 4-2 lead with three of four runs scoring with two outs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings before the Jackets scrapped back in the eighth.
Mamie went 3-for-4 with a triple, RBI and run scored. Mosley drove in two runs on two hits and scored once.
Waynesburg hosts Grove City on April 17.
