WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 12) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team honored its seniors and competed in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match against Westminster at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility on Saturday.
The Titans (5-5, 3-3 PAC) won all six singles flights and two of there doubles matches to earn the 7-0 victory. The Yellow Jackets (2-7, 1-5 PAC) honored seniors
Josh DeFries (East Aurora, N.Y. / East Aurora) and
Andres Rojas (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brashear) prior to the competition.
The freshman duo of
Ethan Clawson (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and
Sam Norris (Natrona Heights, Pa. / Highlands) secured a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. The Titans took the double point with wins at second and third doubles.
Five different Jackets won at least five games in singles play, although Westminster won every set contested.
Norris went down 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles while Clawson rallied late in a 6-1, 6-4 defeat at No. 1 singles.
Rojas won five games in a 6-4, 6-1 setback at fourth singles.
Tyler Gordon (Strongsville, Ohio / OHDELA) nearly forced a third set but was edged in a tiebreaker 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at fifth singles. Thomas Toracaso (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) also threated to extend to a third set but fell 6-3, 7-5 at sixth singles.
The Jackets take on Allegheny on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
