Waynesburg, Pa. (August 29) - After trailing 1-0 early in the first half, the Waynesburg University women's soccer team responded with a pair of tallies to secure a 2-1 season-opening victory over Mount Union.
The Purple Raiders (0-1) struck first in the 24th minute on a ricochet right in front of the net after a cross from the end line to take a 1-0 lead.
Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) provided the game-tying goal for the Yellow Jackets (1-0) late in the first half, and freshman
Miracle Hershey (Lebanon County, Pa. / New Covenant Christian) scored her first collegiate goal early in the second to earn the victory for the Yellow Jackets.
Mohrbacher fired a shot in the low left corner of the goal off an assist presented by
Amanda Pepe (Mantua, N.J. / Gloucester County Institute of Technology) to tie the game in the 37th minute.
Hershey provided Waynesburg's go-ahead goal in the 49th minute.
Reagan Mittendorf (Bluffton, Ohio / Bluffton) provided the assist with a midfield lead pass to Hershey, who ran onto the ball and fired a shot off the Purple Raiders goalie and into the net.
Natasha Ward (New Cumberland, W. Va. / Oak Glen) blocked a surefire scoring opportunity on the goal line in the 65th minute, to preserve Waynesburg's 2-1 lead.
Lex Greenlief (Chester, W. Va. / Oak Glen) turned in a six-save performance in the win.
Mount Union held a 15-8 edge in shots (8-4 SOG), while Waynesburg legged out two more corner kicks (4-2).
The Jackets will be on the road tomorrow against Mount Aloysius at Cresson, Pa., kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.
