LATROBE, Pa. (Aug. 30) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team competed on the second day of the Saint Vincent Bearcat Challenge on Saturday inside the Carey Center.
The Yellow Jackets in their first match of the day faced fellow Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Bethany in a nonconference matchup and then took on Penn State Behrend. The Jackets fell to Bethany in five sets and went down 3-0 against Penn State Behrend.
Game 1 – Bethany 3, Waynesburg 2 (26–24, 24-26, 22-25, 25-18, 15-13)
Waynesburg started the first set rolling out to a 13-4 lead. Bethany (1-2) fought all the way back to draw even at 22 and win the set 26-24.
Waynesburg gained a 9-3 lead in set two. The Bison responded again to tie the frame at 19, however the Jackets took the set, 26-24.
The third set was mainly controlled by the Jackets as the team led for the majority of the set as they took a 25-22 victory.
However, the Bison had the answer in the fourth set to force a winner take all fifth set with the score, 25-18.
The final set was a back and forth battle, with Waynesburg ahead 8-4 and Bethany lead 11-9, before the set was tied at 12. In the Bison emerged with the set and match win by a 15-13 margin.
Kristina Zadrozny (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) finished with once again the team high 15 kills.
Emily Stutzman (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) led the team with a career-high 23 digs, while
Mallory Boyd (West Jefferson, Ohio / West Jefferson) added out 32 assists and 11 digs.
Paige Mortimore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brentwood) collected 21 digs, 10 kills and three blocks. The Jackets also picked up six aces by
Eliana Thornton. Freshmen
Kirsten Shaffer (Hiram, Ohio / Berkshire) and
Madison Zeroski (Cadiz, Ohio / Harrison Central) each notched seven kills and four blocks.
Game 2 – Penn State Behrend 3, Waynesburg 0 (25–13, 25–18, 25–18)
The Jackets were playing the catchup the entire first set, tying the Lions twice but never taking the lead as Behrend took the frame 25-13.
Waynesburg opened the second set scoring the first three points before the Nittany Lions took control and the set, 25-18.
The third started similarly to the second with the Jackets winning the first two points prior to Behrend coming back for good. The Jackets fought back twice to tie the tally at seven and 10 before Behrend put the match away 25-18.
Boyd led the team with five kills, while Zadrozny and
Larissa Howe (Tomball, Texas / Tomball) added four kills of their own. Boyd and
Riley Ruffley (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) each added seven assists, while
Macee Cree (Garards Fort, Pa. / Mapletown) led the team with nine digs.
The Jackets (0–4) welcome Kent State Tuscarawas to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse for their home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 3.
