WAYNESBURG, Pa. (August 31) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team opened its 2025 season at home against Penn State Altoona on Sunday afternoon. The visiting Lions came away with a 7–0 victory at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility.
Sophomore
Julia Umshares (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) forced a third-set super tiebreak at No. 4 singles before falling 6–3, 2–6, 10–5. Freshman
Taylor Stephens (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) battled to a 6–2, 6–4 result at the No. 3 singles spot, while junior
Julia Luzar (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) teamed with Stephens to earn three games at No. 2 doubles.
Freshman
Celeste Matsaudza (Boksburg, South Africa / St Dominic's Catholic School) made her Yellow Jacket debut at the top of both the singles and doubles lineup.
This year's opener saw the Jackets push deeper into several matches than they did in last season's meeting with the Lions.
Waynesburg continues its non-conference slate on Saturday, Sept. 6, with a home matchup against La Roche. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
