Women's Tennis begins PAC play at Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (Sept. 11) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team hit the road for the first time this season and opened Presidents' Athletic Conference play at Franciscan on Thursday afternoon. The host Barons (3-0, 1-0 PAC) earned a 6–1 victory at the Belleview Tennis Courts.

Sophomore Julia Umshares (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) provided the Jackets' highlight by rallying for a comeback win at No. 4 singles. After dropping the opening set 6–4, she bounced back to take the second by the same score and sealed the match with a 10–6 super tiebreak.

Freshman Celeste Matsaudza (Boksburg, South Africa / St Dominic's Catholic School) picked up three games in the second set of her No. 1 singles bout, while fellow freshman Taylor Stephens (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) earned two games in each set at the No. 3 spot. Matsaudza also paired with senior Julia Corey (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) at the top of the doubles lineup.

Waynesburg (0–2, 0–1 PAC) returns home to host Mount Aloysius on Saturday, Sept. 13. First serve from the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility is set for 1 p.m.
