LATROBE, Pa. (August 6) – The Waynesburg University football team was tabbed sixth in the Presidents' Athletic Conference preseason football poll as the conference held its annual media on the campus of Saint Vincent College.
Head coach
Dr. Cornelius Coleman and senior wide receiver
Isaac Trout (Ruffs Dale, Pa. / Southmoreland) took part in a question and answer session about the upcoming season with PAC Associate Commissioner and Director of Communications Brian Rose.
Coleman spoke on the state of the program as he enters his fourth season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets, especially Waynesburg's senior class.
"To get in our first recruiting class and built it year-by-year, and to sit back now and understand that we have close to 30 seniors," said Coleman. "It means a lot for our campus community, for our program as a whole. We're excited to go out and play for one another, we're excited for everything."
Trout is a three-year starter for the Jackets at receiver and has led Jackets in receptions and receiving touchdowns in each of the last two seasons.
Trout articulated the outlook of the senior class on goals for the upcoming season.
"For all of us, especially being such an older group now since we all came in together, we definitely want postseason play," said Trout. "We haven't made it to the playoffs yet. We went into week 11 last year with a chance to break .500, getting over that hump to a bowl game would be important to us."
The PAC enters the 2025 season with one ranked team and two others receiving votes in the D3football.com preseason top 25 rankings. Last year, Washington & Jefferson, Grove City and Carnegie Mellon each claimed a share of the conference championship and each earned a spot in the NCAA DIII Football Playoffs. Grove City enters the season at No. 23 in the national poll with W&J and Westminster among teams receiving votes.
W&J topped the preseason poll with 431 points and 17 first-place votes. Grove City in second with 13 first-place votes and Westminster was third with a dozen first-place nods. The Jackets finished just seven points behind fifth-place Geneva in the second-closest margin between any two teams in the 11-team poll.
Waynesburg opens its 2025 season on Sept. 6 at John F. Wiley Stadium against No. 25 John Carroll.
