Meadville, Pa. (Sept. 13) – The Waynesburg University volleyball played two matches at the Allegheny Gator Invitational on Saturday Afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets dropped both matches in three sets. Waynesburg matched up with Penn State Behrend (10-3) for the second time this season and then took on Houghton (4-3) in the nightcap.
Game 1 – Penn State Behrend 3, Waynesburg 0 (25–17, 26-24, 25-13)
Waynesburg never led in the first or third sets against Behrend.
The Jackets fought hard in the second set, leading as late as 14-13 and tying the Lions at 18, 22 and 23 before Behrend scored the final two points to take the frame.
Aubrey Work (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) and
Kirsten Shaffer (Hiram, Ohio / Berkshire) both finished with five kills. Shaffer also finished with two blocks of her own as well.
Kristina Zadrozny (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) collected four kills, eight digs, a block and an assist.
Riley Ruffley (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) led the team with 17 assists, two aces and two blocks.
Game 2 – Houghton 3, Waynesburg 0 (25–13, 25–22, 25–10)
Houghton scored seven of the match's first eight points on route to a 25-13 victory in set one. The Jackets trailed 20-19 late in set two before Houghton prevailed, 25-22.
In the third, Waynesburg showed grit, gaining an early 10-5 lead however the Jackets eventually fell in the third set to the Highlanders 25-23.
Zadrozny notched 10 kills. Ruffley posted 17 assists and seven digs, tying with
Paige Mortimore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brentwood) as the team's digs leader.
The Jackets (1-9) begin conference play at home against Chatham on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
