WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 18) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team put together several competitive performances on Thursday evening, but visiting Saint Vincent came away with a 5–2 Presidents' Athletic Conference decision at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility.
The setback moved the Jackets to 1–3 overall and 0–2 in PAC play, while the Bearcats improved to 4–3, 2–2 PAC.
Waynesburg picked up both of its points in singles play. Senior
Julia Corey (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) recorded a straight-set victory at No. 5 singles, 6–2, 6–3, while senior
Alli Bailey (New Brighton, Pa. / Riverside) followed with a 6–4, 6–3 win at the No. 6 spot.
Sophomore
Julia Umshares (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) stretched her No. 4 singles match to a third-set super tiebreak, before falling 6–2, 6–7 (7–0), 10–4.
The Jackets also notched a doubles win at the No. 2 position, where
Julia Luzar (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brentwood) and
Taylor Stephens (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) teamed up for a 6–2 victory. However, Saint Vincent took the first and third doubles flights to secure the opening point.
Waynesburg returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 21, with a home doubleheader against La Roche.
