Women's Tennis sweeps La Roche

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 21) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team swept a home doubleheader against La Roche on Sunday at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility, recording identical 6–1 victories to even its record at 3–3. With the sweep, the Jackets clinched their winningest season since 2014.

Waynesburg swept all three doubles courts in both matches. At No. 1, freshman Celeste Matsaudza (Boksburg, South Africa / St Dominic's Catholic School) and senior Julia Corey (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) won 6–4 in the opener and 6–0 in the nightcap. At No. 2, junior Julia Luzar (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and freshman Taylor Stephens (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) posted 6–3 and 6–4 wins.

Seniors Alli Bailey (Mount Pleasant, Pa. / Mount Pleasant) and Aubrey Burns (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong) added 6–0 and 6–2 victories at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Matsaudza went 2–0 at No. 1 with straight-set wins (6–1, 6–3 in match one; 6–1, 6–0 in match two) for her first collegiate singles victories. Corey finished 2–0 at No. 5 (6–0, 6–1; 6–2, 6–0), Stephens posted two straight-set wins at No. 3 (6–0, 6–0; 6–1, 6–3) and sophomore Julia Umshares (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) won twice at No. 4 (6–0, 6–0; 6–0, 6–1).

Burns added a 6–1, 6–1 win at No. 6 in the opener, while Bailey delivered a 6–1, 6–0 victory at No. 6 in the second match. The competitive loss came at No. 2 in the nightcap, where junior Karly Starcher (Williamston, W. Va. / St. Mary's) took two games in the second set of a 0–6, 2–6 result.

Waynesburg travels to Allegheny on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. PAC match in Meadville, Pa.
