Women's tennis hosts Westminster in PAC showdown

Yellow Jackets challenge Titans, but come up short in 5-2 contest

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 26) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team hosted Westminster for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets put forth a game effort against the Titans, but came up short by the final score of 5-2.

The Titans (3-4, 2-4) won the doubles point with victories at the first and second spots. The Waynesburg (3-5, 0-4) duo of sophomore Julia Umshares (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and senior Alli Bailey (Mount Pleasant, Pa. / Mount Pleasant) picked up a forfeit win at the number-three spot.

Singles competition saw the visitors score victories in flights one through four to clinch the win. However, freshman Taylor Stephens (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) nearly forced a third set at the number-three spot, but came up just short in set one by the score of 7-5.

Umshares won a set fourth singles, while senior Julia Corey (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) downed her opponent at fifth singles in straight sets (6-1, 6-0). Bailey added another forfeit to her day, this one coming at the number-six slot.

Waynesburg returns to non-PAC competition on Sunday, Sept. 28, when it plays host to Ursuline. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
