WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 28) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team took a break from Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Sunday to host Ursuline under warm, sunny conditions at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility. The Yellow Jackets defended their home court admirably and scored a 6-1 victory over the Arrows.
Waynesburg (4-5) swept the three doubles matches to secure the doubles point and get the day off to a fast start. Senior
Julia Corey (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) and sophomore
Julia Umshares (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) teamed up for a 6-3 win at the number-one flight. The duo of freshman
Taylor Stephens (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) and junior
Julia Luzar (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) logged a 6-2 victory at the number-two slot.
Finally, seniors
Alli Bailey (Mount Pleasant, Pa. / Mount Pleasant) and
Aubrey Burns (Kittaning, Pa. / Armstrong) showed their younger teammates how its done with a 6-2 win at third doubles to complete the sweep.
The Jackets carried the momentum of doubles success into singles competition, as Stephens, Umshares, Corey, Bailey and Burns all won in straight sets.
Waynesburg will return to PAC competition on Tuesday, Sept. 30, with a road trip to Thiel. Match time from Greenville, Pa., is scheduled for 4 p.m.
