Waynesburg rolls to PAC victory at Thiel

Yellow Jackets log first conference win in five years

GREENVILLE, Pa. (Sept. 30) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team returned to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Tuesday with a road trip to Thiel. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Tomcats 6-1 for their first conference victory since the 2020-21 campaign.

Waynesburg (5-5, 1-4) also picked up its fifth victory of the fall, which is the most in program history since 2014.

The Jackets got off to a strong start with their second-straight sweep in doubles play, which featured all three Orange and Black pairings posting 6-1 victories.

Freshman Celeste Matsaudza (Boskburg, South Africa / St. Dominic's Catholic School) and senior Julia Corey (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) teamed up at the number-one slot. Junior Julia Luzar (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and freshman Taylor Stephens (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) joined forces at the number-two spot. Seniors Aubrey Burns (Kittaning, Pa. / Armstrong) and Alli Bailey (Mount Pleasant, Pa. / Mount Pleasant) completed the sweep at third doubles.

Matsaudza, Stephens, Umshares, Corey and Burns all added singles wins in straight sets to clinch the win. Luzar nearly joined her teammates with a 2-0 day, but came up just short in a marathon match that went 6-7, 6-4, 14-12.

A jam-packed week of competition continues tomorrow with a PAC match at Geneva. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m. It will be their second of four matches in the span of seven days.
