Friday eclipses 1,000 points as Jackets roll past Franciscan

Senior guard pours in 18 points to lead Waynesburg past Barons in PAC tilt

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (Jan. 28) – Senior Kalista Friday (Woodsfield, Ohio / Monroe Central) scored her 1,000th point as a collegiate basketball player as the Waynesburg University women's basketball team took down Franciscan 71-60 in a road Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest.

Friday earned points 1,000 and 1,001 in a trip to the free-throw line late in the fourth quarter. She came in 17 points away from the 1,000-point mark, finishing the game with 18. Friday scored 216 of her 1,000 points during her freshman year at Defiance College, with 785 and counting at Waynesburg University. She is the 14th 1,000-point scorer in program history.

Waynesburg (8-10, 4-5) held Franciscan (3-15, 0-9) scoreless for nearly the first five minutes of the game, building a 7-0 lead in the process, all of which was scored by junior guard Kara McFadden (Painesville, Ohio / Fairport Harding). Waynesburg led 12-1 before the Barons made their first field goal of the contest.

Franciscan went on a 6-0 run to make it 13-9, but junior guard Mia Henkins (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) put Waynesburg up 16-9 with a three-ball at the buzzer, her first trey of the game.

Early in the second quarter, Franciscan narrowed the deficit to four multiple times. McFadden drilled her second three-pointer of the game to get into double figures and give Waynesburg a 23-16 lead. The play sparked an 8-0 run for the Yellow Jackets, including Henkins' second three-ball of the game, that pushed Waynesburg's lead to 28-16.

Friday joined the three-point party late in the first half, but her trey was matched by one from Franciscan, which made it a 31-24 game at halftime in favor of Waynesburg. The three put Friday 10 points away from 1,000 at the time.

Henkins converted on three three-pointers, helping Waynesburg go on a 13-0 run midway through the third quarter. The run ended with a few buckets from Friday, bringing her to 13 on the day.

The Yellow Jackets carried an 18-point advantage (53-35) into the fourth quarter.

A Franciscan run over the final 10 minutes was shut down by Waynesburg, who claimed an 11-point victory, completing the season sweep over Franciscan.

Henkins and McFadden joined Friday in double digits with 17 and 15 points, respectively. McFadden also joined junior Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) for the team lead in rebounds with seven.

The Yellow Jackets return home this Saturday against Thiel. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
