Men's soccer shuts out Saint Francis

Yellow Jackets score four first-half goals en route to 5-0 win

LORETTO, Pa. (Oct. 14) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team took a dominant 5-0 shutout victory against Saint Francis on Wednesday at the Stokes Soccerplex.

The Yellow Jackets (5-6-2) set the tone early on with a 10th-minute goal from senior Matthew Serrano (Norther Potomac, Md. / Thomas S. Wootton), who tallied his second of the season in the past two games. Junior Sam Norris (Natrona Heights, Pa. / Highlands) picked up the assist.

Sophomore John Engel (Dallas, Ga, / East Paulding) delivered Waynesburg's second score of the match by way of a penalty kick after the Red Wolves (0-11) were tagged with a yellow card. The Yellow Jackets refused to let up as they scored twice more heading into the halftime break, with tallies coming in the 39th and 43rd minutes.

Freshman Johnny Mancias (Grove City, Ohio / Central Crossing) found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal off a feed from junior Josh Smith (Dover, Ohio / Dover). Freshman Josue Ayala (Dumfries, Va. / Saint John Paul Great Catholic) and sophomore Cogan Flanagan followed suit as Ayala found Flanagan for his first goal as a Yellow Jacket.

Waynesburg scored one final time as another Jacket delivered his first collegiate goal. Sophomore J.P. Groves (Hampstead, Md. / Delone Catholic) netted a shot with just 32 seconds remaining before the final horn.

Sophomore Josiah Shimizu (Renton, Wash. / Kentridge) was in the net for Waynesburg the entire second half and notched three saves. Shimizu relieved senior starter Zach Reed (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton La Salle), who stopped the only shot on goal he faced.

The Yellow Jackets dominated the Red Wolves in shots (23-6) and shots on goal (14-4).

Waynesburg will head to Greenville, Pa. next, where they face off against Thiel on Saturday, October 17. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m.
