Men's soccer takes Geneva to a shootout in PAC quarterfinal clash

Yellow Jackets season ends in heartbreaking 1-1 draw

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Oct. 31) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team gave Geneva all it could handle in their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament quarterfinal clash. Unfortunately, the Golden Tornadoes outlasted Waynesburg through regulation, two overtimes and a shootout to advance to the semifinals by a 1-1 final score.

Geneva (8-2-6) opened the scoring in the 44th minute and took a 1-0 lead with just 32 seconds left before halftime. The Golden Tornadoes carried the advantage throughout the majority of the second half, but Waynesburg (8-8-3) didn't give up and was finally able to find the back of the net.

Junior Sarpong Kwabiah (Odenton, Md. / Meade) drew a foul in the goalie box late in the 81st minute that led to a penalty kick. Kwabiah didn't let his teammates down as he beat the Geneva goalkeeper to tie the score.

Waynesburg nearly completed an improbable comeback win with just seven seconds on the clock, but sophomore John Engel's (Dallas, Ga. / East Paulding) shot on goal was denied to send the game into overtime.

Senior goalkeeper Zach Reed (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton La Salle) came up big for Waynesburg in the two 10-minute extra periods by stoning three shots on goal and keeping the score knotted at 1-1. Once again, the road team had a chance to snatch away a win, but a try by freshman Johnny Mancias (Grove City, Ohio / Central Crossing) was stopped with 2:50 left to play in the second overtime period.

After the shootout began, both teams cashed in on their first five attempts. Geneva's keeper made the first stop on Waynesburg's sixth try and that proved to be the precursor to the game-winning try by the Golden Tornadoes.

Reed ended his collegiate career with eight total saves.

Geneva outshot Waynesburg 19-14, but shots on goal were even at nine for each squad.

The 2026 season ended with Waynesburg improving on its overall wins total (7 to 8) and PAC victories (2 to 5) from 2025.
