Softball travels to Geneva

Yellow Jackets suffer heart-beaking loss in game one, before being swept in Beaver Falls

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (March 31) – The Waynesburg University softball team traveled to Geneva on Tuesday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with the Golden Tornadoes. The Yellow Jackets looked poised for victory in game one, but a tough seventh inning doomed the visitors, who also dropped game two in a sweep for the home team.

Offense dominated game one, as Waynesburg (16-8, 4-4) out-hit Geneva (17-5, 6-2) 13-10.

The Jackets opened the scoring in the top of the first when sophomore Rylee Rohbeck (Oakdale, Pa. / South Fayette) doubled in sophomore Meysa Heitmann (Morgantown, W.Va. / University). Geneva responded with a two-spot in the bottom of the first to grab its first lead of the day at 2-1.

After a scoreless second frame, the visiting team took advantage of a GT error that allowed two runs to score and put the Orange and Black back up by one at 3-2. Once again, the host squad responded, this time tying the game in the bottom of the inning.

Momentum swung back to Waynesburg in the top of the fourth when Heitmann came through with a run-scoring single that brought freshman Lorryn Sepe (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn-Trafford) home from third. The Jacket edge doubled in the sixth, when Rohbeck singled home Heitmann to make the score 5-3.

Waynesburg had a chance to further extend its lead in the seventh after putting runners on the corners with one out. Unfortunately, a double play halted the rally and may have fired up Geneva as it headed to the bottom of the seventh trailing by two.

A double, a single, an error and a sacrifice fly combined to tie the score at 5-5. After getting back-to-back fly outs to put the game on the verge of extra innings, another hit and a walk-off homerun allowed Geneva to put up four runs in the seventh and take the opener 7-5.

Heitmann, senior Braylee Corbin (Petersburg, W.Va. / Petersburg), Rohbeck, Sepe, senior Madie Cicero (Wllowick, Ohio / Eastlake North) and senior Kassidy Trimble (Parkersburg, W.Va. / Parkersburg South) logged two hits each in a balanced Jacket attack. Rohbeck tied for the game lead with two RBIs and Heitmann did the same with two runs scored.

Sophomore Pressly Meadows (Annapolis, Ohio / Edison) got the start in the circle and suffered the loss after allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits and two walks. She recorded three strikeouts on the day.

Waynesburg struggled to maintain its offensive rhythm into game two, as it was limited to just four hits in a 3-0 loss. Geneva scored the only run it needed in the second, before tacking on two insurance runs in the fifth.

Freshman Emily Pratt (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) put together a solid start in the circle, despite taking the loss. She allowed just one run on four hits and a walk over four innings of work.

Waynesburg won't have much time to dwell on Tuesday's losses, as they are scheduled to host Franciscan tomorrow in another PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
