Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 4) – The Waynesburg University baseball team squared off with Trine on Wednesday at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Yellow Jackets fell 13-3 to the Thunder.
Trine (3-6) scored all the runs it needed in the bottom of the second inning, when five Thunder hitters crossed home plate. Waynesburg (7-3) battled back with a score in the fourth and two more in the fifth to cut deficit down to two at 5-3.
Senior
Hunter Hamilton (Holbrook, Pa. / West Greene) tripled in the fourth and came in to score on an RBI groundout by junior
Trent Giraffa (Hanover, Pa. / Delone Catholic). Sophomore
Kaden Flambard (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) singled home junior
Hunter Mamie (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) before senior
Jordan Mosley (St. Albans, W.Va. / St. Albans) lifted a sacrifice fly that allowed senior
Noah Gabriel (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) to sprint home.
Trine cemented its victory with a run in the fifth, six in the sixth and the game's final tally in the bottom of the seventh.
Sophomore
Ryan Opfer started on the mound and suffered the loss after giving up six runs, only one of which was earned, on nine hits and a walk over five innings of work.
A pair of Waynesburg errors proved costly, as nine of Trine's runs were unearned.
The Jackets are back on the field tomorrow, when they wake up bright and early for a 9 a.m. game against Dubuque.
