HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 4) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team wrapped up its brief stay down south by facing Johnson & Wales (N.C.) on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets dominated doubles play and added three singles victories to defeat the Wildcats 4-2.
Freshman
Celeste Matsaudza (Boksburg, South Africa / St. Dominic's Catholic School) and senior
Julia Corey (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) had a fight on their hands at first doubles, but gritted out a 7-6 win. Junior
Julia Luzar (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and freshman
Taylor Stephens (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) enjoyed a little more breathing room in their 6-3 triumph at the number two spot. Sophomore
Julia Umshares (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and senior
Aubrey Burns (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong) completed the sweep by downing the opposition 7-6.
Stephens, Umshares and Corey both posted singles wins in flights three, four and five, respectively, to complete 2-0 days. All three won in straight sets.
Burns was on her way to a second-straight 2-0 day this spring, but her singles contest, which she was leading one set to none, was ended early because the final outcome of the match was already determined and another match needed to be started.
Waynesburg is scheduled to return to action in a little over a month with a match at Carlow on Wednesday, April 8. Start time is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
