Softball splits on final day at Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic

Yellow Jackets outslug St. Elizabeth before falling to Wilkes

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.  (March 5) – The Waynesburg University softball team wrapped up its five-day stay at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic with a pair of games on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets erased a five-run deficit to beat St. Elizabeth 11-8 before falling 5-0 to Wilkes.

Waynesburg (9-3) cranked out a season-high 18 hits against the Eagles (2-6), but found itself in a 7-2 hole heading into the fifth innings. The Jackets started turning things around by putting up four runs in the top of the frame. Senior Bella DeMark (Carnegie, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) cut her team's deficit down to three with a two-run single. Two batters later, freshman Sydney Fisher (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Upper St. Clair) logged a two-run base knock of her own to pull her team to just one of tying the score (7-6).

The Jackets took the lead for good in their half of the sixth with a trio of scores. DeMark struck again with her second two-run single in as many innings, before senior Madie Cicero (Willowick, Ohio / Eastlake North) drew a bases-loaded walk to make the score 9-7.

St. Elizabeth struck for its final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth, before Waynesburg closed out the scoring in the top of the seventh. Senior Braylee Corbin (Petersburg, W.Va. / Petersburg) singled with two outs on the board and junior Jamie Kelly (Front Royal, Va. / Skyline) brought her home with a double. DeMark put the finishing touches on a dominant day at the plate with an RBI two bagger of her own to bring about the final score.

After the Waynesburg offense stole the show for three innings, its defense and winning pitcher Pressly Meadows (Annapolis, Ohio / Edison) put the Eagles down in order to close out the victory.

DeMark was absolutely dominant in leading her team to victory. She went 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and five RBIs. Fisher added a personal collegiate-best four RBIs on a single and a double, while Corbin added a 3-for-5 showing with a pair of runs. Kelly and sophomore Meysa Heitmann (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) also scored twice in the victory.

Meadows entered the circle in the middle of the third to pick up her third win of the season. She allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits and one walk, while punching out three opposing batters.

Unfortunately, Waynesburg was unable to carry its offensive fireworks over to its final game of the trip. The Colonels (7-1), meanwhile, scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the fourth as part of a three-run frame. Wilkes added two runs in the fifth.

Heitmann and sophomore Graeson Grubbs (Volant, Pa. / Wilmington) were able to pick up two hits each on the final game of the trip.

Senior Autumn Stemple (Morgantown, W.Va. / University) got the start in the circle and recorded three shutout innings, before turning the ball over to freshman Emma Wear (Wheeling, W.Va. / Wheeling Park), who took the loss in relief.

Waynesburg returns to action on Tuesday, March 10, when it hosts Mount Aloysius for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
