Baseball splits PAC doubleheader with Saint Vincent

Jackets fall 7-2 in game one, roll to 15-5 victory in game two

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 11) – The Waynesburg University baseball team hosted Saint Vincent for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets bounced back from a 7-2 loss in game one to earn a 15-5 (7 innings) victory in the late contest.

The Bearcats (9-17, 5-7) scored all the runs they needed for victory with a three spot in the top of the first inning. Waynesburg (11-19, 2-10) got one of those runs back in the bottom of the second when junior Hunter Mamie (Eighty Four, Pa. / Ringgold) slugged is his first homerun of the season.

Saint Vincent padded its advantage with three runs in the fifth and a final tally in the seventh to go up 7-1. Senior Hunter Hamilton (Holbrook, Pa. / West Greene) drove in junior Ian Trott (Clairton, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic) for the game's last run.

Hamilton, Trott and freshman Brayden Krebs (York, Pa. / Susquehannock) tallied two hits each in the early contest.

Senior Dalton Lucey (Waynesburg, Pa. / West Greene) got the start on the mound and suffered the loss, despite allowing a respectable two earned runs over 5.0 innings of work.

Game two saw Waynesburg strike first thanks to a solo homerun by freshman Eli Boring (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) in the top of the first inning. The Bearcats got the run back in the top of the second, but the Jackets eventually took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame.

The home team scored three times in that half-inning, with two of the runs coming on RBI hits by Trott (a single) and freshman Sam Watson (Morgantown, W.Va. / Morgantown) (a double).

The Bearcats fired back with a two-spot in the third that made the score 4-3. Once again, the home team responded to the challenge, this time scoring three times in the fifth.

Saint Vincent fired back with a two-spot that made the score 7-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Momentum swung back to Waynesburg's side with three more runs, one of which came home to score on a Hamilton triple. The Jackets put the finishing touches on the victory in the bottom of the seventh.

Boring came up with the biggest hit of the afternoon when he connected on a bases-clearing triple to make the score 13-5. An RBI double by senior Noah Gabriel (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) put the Orange and Black up 14-5, giving Krebs a chance to end the game early. He did just that with a single that sent Gabriel sprinting home for the walk-off win.

Boring and Krebs had absolutely monster games at the dish to pace the Jackets. Boring went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and four runs scored, while Krebs posted a 2-for-5 showing with a run scored and three more driven in.

Junior Alex Nicholson (Cortland, Ohio / Mathews) got the win in relief after tossing two innings of shutout baseball.

After playing six games in four days, the Jackets get a chance to catch their breath before facing off with Westminster in a PAC doubleheader on Tuesday, April 14. First pitch from Waynesburg is scheduled for 1 p.m.
