NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (April 15) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team visited Westminster on Wednesday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest. While the matchup consisted of many hard-fought matches, the Jackets fell 5-1 to the host Titans.
Westminster (3-7, 3-4) earned the doubles point by with victories in the first two flights Waynesburg's (5-9 1-5) third doubles tandem of sophomore
Sam Norris (Natrona Heights, Pa. / Highlands) and
Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / St. Joseph Central Catholic) took the flight with a grueling 7-5 victory.
Sophomore
Ethan Clawson (Waynesburg, Pa. / Trinity) got the Jackets on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 win at first singles. Unfortunately, Westminster was able to pull out closely-fought matches at second singles (7-5, 6-4), third singles (6-3, 7-5) and fourth singles (6-4, 6-4) to clinch the win.
The number-six flight wasn't completed because of inclement weather. Johnson bounced back from a 6-4 loss in set one to win set two 6-2 before the early conclusion.
The Jackets face PAC foe Geneva at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility tomorrow for senior day. Start time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
