Softball splits final non-conference DH of the season with PSU Behrend

Heitmann has day to remember in leading Jackets against Lions

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 23) – The Waynesburg University softball team hosted Penn State Behrend for the final non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) of the year on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets walked off a record-setting 5-4 victory in game one, but couldn't hold a lead in game two, which went to Behrend 10-4.

Game one belonged to Waynesburg (26-12) sophomore Meysa Heitmann (Morgantown, W.Va. / University), who not only went 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, but she eclipsed 100 hits in just her second year with the team and set a new single-season hit program hits record with 54, which also moved her into first place in the conference.

Heitmann got her monster day started with a two-out single in the bottom of the first inning and moved to second on a base knock by sophomore Tori Foust (Blairsville, Pa. / River Valley). A third-straight single, this one from senior Braylee Corbin (Petersburg, W.Va. / Petersburg), brought Heitmann in to score the game's first run.

Behrend (22-10) tied the score in the top of the second, but the Jackets took it right back in the bottom of the third. Heitmann logged her second single of the contest and got to stroll home when Foust belted her first collegiate homerun to put Waynesburg up 3-1.

Momentum swung back to the visitors, who plated two in the top of the fourth before grabbing their first lead of the day with a go-ahead tally in the sixth.

Staring down a loss, Waynesburg didn't blink as it went to work in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Rylee Rohbeck (Oakdale, Pa. / South Fayette) led off for a single and was run for by senior Madie Cicero (Willowick, Ohio / Eastlake North). A groundout moved Cicero into scoring position and Heitmann collected hit number four to tie the game up. After Foust was hit by pitch to move Heitmann into scoring position, the second-year standout sprinted home on a two-out walk-off single by freshman Lorryn Sepe (Pititsburgh, Pa. / Penn-Trafford).

Foust joined Heitmann in gathering multiple hits by going 2-for-3 at the dish.

Freshman Emily Pratt (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) got the start in the circle and allowed three runs, two of which were earned, on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Fellow freshman Morgan Walt (Hunker, Pa. / Hempfield) came in out of the bullpen to get the victory in relief. She gave up a run on three hits and a walk to improve to 9-0 on the season.

Waynesburg battled back from a 3-0 first-inning deficit in game two with a run in the second, a run in the third and a two spot in the fourth. Junior Jamie Kelly (Front Royal, Va. / Skyline) had the big hit of game two for the Jackets when she rapped a two-run double to put her team up 4-3.

Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived as the Lions got a three-run homerun in the fifth that proved to be the deciding play of the game. The visitors added four scores in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Kelly paced the Jackets in the late contest with a pair of doubles in four at-bats. Her 17 two baggers are tops in the PAC and are one shy of tying Alex Lawrence for most in a season in program history.

Waynesburg, which has clinched a spot in the upcoming PAC tournament, wraps up the regular season on Saturday, April 25, with a road trip to Westminster, which currently sits in the top spot of the conference standings. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
