ALTOONA, Pa. (Aug. 30) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team opened the 2026 season at Penn State Altoona on Sunday afternoon. The Lions took a 7-0 victory over the Yellow Jackets at the Adler Tennis Courts.
The Lions (1-0) swept through the doubles competition by taking all three flights. Sophomore
Celeste Matsaudza (Boksburg, South Africa / St. Dominic's Catholic School) and senior
Karly Starcher (Williamston, W. Va. / St. Mary's) put together a strong effort for Waynesburg (0-1) at number one doubles, but fell short 6-4. Similarly, junior
Julia Umshares (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and freshman
Gabby Peiritsh took a 6-4 defeat at the third flight.
Penn State Altoona kept its momentum heading into singles competition, winning all six matches.
Waynesburg returns home to the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility where it will host Pitt Greensburg on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m.
