Women's tennis wins home opener against Pitt Greensburg

Yellow Jackets down Bobcats 5-2

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 8) – The Waynesburg women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the 2026-27 campaign on Tuesday evening, defeating Pitt-Greensburg by a 5-2 score at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility. The Yellow Jackets improved to 1-1 on the season, while the Bobcats fell to 3-1.

Waynesburg (1-1) built an early advantage by claiming two of the three doubles matches. The duo of sophomore Taylor Stephens (Morgantown, W.Va.) and senior Julia Luzar (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) earned a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, while junior Julia Umshares (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and freshman Gabby Peiritsh matched that score with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

The Yellow Jackets secured the match during singles play by winning four of the six flights.

At No. 3 singles, Stephens battled through a competitive match to win 7-5, 6-2. Umshares was dominant at No. 4 singles, posting a 6-0, 6-0 shutout victory. Peiritsh added another convincing performance at No. 5 singles, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win.

The most dramatic contest of the evening came at No. 6 singles, where senior Karly Starcher (Williamstown, W.Va. / St. Mary's) rallied for a three-set victory. After taking the opening set 6-0, Starcher

Waynesburg will look for its second-straight win on Friday, Sept. 11, when it travels to Carlow. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
