PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Sept. 11) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team notched its second consecutive win by defeating Carlow by a 4-3 score on Friday at the Highland Park Tennis Courts. The Yellow Jackets improved 2-1 on the season, while the Celtics fell to 0-6.

Waynesburg (2-1) claimed the early advantage, taking two doubles match victories to clinch the point. The duo of senior Julia Luzar (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and sophomore Taylor Stephens (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) delivered a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles, while junior Julia Umshares (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and freshman Gabby Peiritsh took down their opponents at No. 3 doubles.

The Yellow Jackets secured the overall triumph in singles play by winning three flights.

Umshares delivered a strong win at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-3 score. Peiritish rolled at the No. 5 spot, posting a 6-0, 6-0 shutout. The contest was ultimately decided at sixth singles, where senior Karly Starcher (Williamstown, W. Va. / St. Mary's) showed her mental and physical toughness. Starcher battled through a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaker in the opening set, before sealing her team's victory 7-5 in set two.

Waynesburg won't have long to celebrate its well-deserved win, as it will head to Cresson, Pa., tomorrow to take on Mount Aloysius. Start time is slated for 2 p.m.
