PEPPER PIKE, Ohio (Sept. 26) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team claimed its fourth victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Ursuline College by a 5-2 score in non-Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
Waynesburg (4-3) gained early momentum by securing the doubles point with victories at the second and third flights. The duo of sophomore Taylor Stephens (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) and senior Julia Luzar (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles, while freshman Gabby Peiritsh (South Park, Pa. / South Park) and junior Julia Umshares (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) earned a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles to put the Yellow Jackets up 1-0 heading into singles play.
The Jackets continued to find success in singles competition, winning four of six contests. At the top flight, sophomore Celeste Matsaudza (Boksburg, South Africa / St. Dominic's Catholic School) delivered a dominant performance, defeating her opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Waynesburg also received convincing wins from Umshares and Peiritsh. Umshares rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 4 singles, while Peiritsh posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles. The most competitive match of the afternoon came at No. 3 singles, where Stephens battled through three sets before earning a 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 match-tiebreak victory.
The win clinched Waynesburg's fourth singles point and secured the team's overall victory.
The Jackets return to PAC play on Monday, Sept. 28, when they host Thiel. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
