WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 28) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team turned in a dominant performance Monday afternoon, sweeping Thiel College by a 7-0 score in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at the Bechtle Family Tennis Facility.
Waynesburg (5-3, 1-2) controlled the match from the opening doubles competition and never looked back, dropping just two games across the three doubles courts to secure an early advantage.
The No. 1 tandem of sophomore Celeste Matsaudza (Boksburg, South Africa / St. Dominic's Catholic School) and senior Karly Starcher (Williamstown, W.Va. / St. Mary's) opened the match with a 6-0 victory, while the No. 2 pair of senior Julia Luzar (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) and sophomore Taylor Stephens (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) earned a 6-1 win. At No. 3 doubles, freshman Gabby Peiritsh (South Park, Pa. / South Park) and junior Julia Umshares (Washington, Pa. / Trinity) gcompleted the sweep with a 6-1 triumph.
The Yellow Jackets carried that momentum into singles play, where they won all six flights in straight sets.
At the top position, Matsaudza was nearly flawless, posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles. Luzar followed with an equally impressive 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, while Stephens secured a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 3.
Waynesburg's depth was on full display in the bottom half of the lineup. Umshares rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles, Peiritsh earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5, and Starcher completed the sweep with a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles.
The Jackets return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 30, when they travel to Washington & Jefferson for another PAC contest. Match time against the Presidents is scheduled for 5 p.m.
