Men's soccer wins emotional PAC matchup with W&J

Yellow Jackets snap 13-match winless streak against the Presidents with a 2-1 victory

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 30) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team hosted Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday evening for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. The Yellow Jackets built up a 2-0 halftime lead and held off the Presidents for a 2-1 triumph.

It didn't take long for Waynesburg (4-4-2, 2-2-1) to get on the board thanks to senior Zachary Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / St. Joseph Central Catholic). Johnson was set up for his second goal of the season by classmate Matthew Serrano (North Potomac, Md. / Thomas S. Wootton) late in the ninth minute to put the host squad up 1-0.

Junior Sarpong Kwabiah (Odenton, Md. / Meade) doubled his team's advantage with an unassisted tally midway through the 31st minute. It was Kwabiah's team-leading sixth goal, all of which have come in the team's last seven games.

Waynesburg took its multi-goal advantage into halftime and maintained it until the 65th minute, when W&J (3-5, 2-2) put up its only point of the contest.

Senior goalkeeper Zach Reed (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton La Salle) made the slim edge hold up, allowing Waynesburg to celebrate a victory that snapped a 13-game winless streak against the Presidents. Reed tallied four saves to secure maybe his biggest win as a collegiate player.

Waynesburg will look to carry the momentum of Wednesday's most recent victory into Saturday's home meeting with Hiram. Start time for the conference clash is scheduled for 8 p.m.
