Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Joe Chirillo

Women's soccer rolls past La Roche thanks to big second half

Yellow Jackets blank Redhawks 4-0 behind outstanding defensive effort

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Sept. 8) - The Waynesburg University women's soccer team notched its first win of the season against non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponent La Roche on Tuesday. The Jackets also achieved their first shutout of the year in the 4-0 victory.

Waynesburg (1-3) and La Roche (1-1) played a scoreless first half. After halftime, senior Julz Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. / Freedom) broke up the shutout in the 46th minute. Later in the 55th minute, Mohrbacher scored again to put her team up 2-0. Junior Amanda Pepe (Mantua, N.J. / Gloucester County Institute of Technology) assisted on both Mohrbacher goals, putting her at a team-high six points on the year.

A third of the way through the match, sophomore Ryan White (Lewisburg, W.Va. / Greenbrier East) scored to give the Jackets a 3-0 advantage. Sophomore Brynn Kirby (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) logged the assist on the tally, giving her her first point of the season.

White was not finished, as she found the back of the net again in the 78th minute to bring about the final score. Freshman Bella Kershasky (Suffolk, Va. / Nansemond River) got the helper for her first collegiate point.

Senior goalkeeper Lex Greenlief (Chester, W.Va. / Oak Glen) played 90 minutes and logged her first shutout of the season, but the stingy Orange and Black defense deserved the bulk of the credit for the clean sheet, as La Roche was held to just two total shots, neither of which were on goal.

The Yellow Jackets are back in play on Friday, Sept. 11, for the first home match of the season against another squad of Yellow Jackets, this one being from Baldwin Wallace. Start time at John F. Wiley Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
