WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 22) – In front of a chilly senior night crowd, the Waynesburg men's soccer team and their opponents from Geneva went back-and-forth under the lights of John F. Wiley Stadium.
When the dust settled, the visiting Golden Tornadoes earned a 4-2 win over the Yellow Jackets.
Geneva (11-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the second period off of a pair of goals by Bruce Fox and one more by Josh Mann. However, around a minute after falling behind by a trio of scores, Jacket senior Shane Gottschalk, pictured above during an earlier game, scored his first goal of the season off of an assist by Nick Munnell during the 48th minute.
Waynesburg (5-10-2) cut the deficit to 3-2 during the 76th minute thanks to freshman David Floyd burying his second goal of the year. Again, Munnell recorded an assist on the score.
Unfortunately, the Jackets allowed a second goal to Mann during the 79th minute that sealed the deal for Geneva.
Waynesburg senior goalkeeper Brad Davis suffered the loss in goal after making three saves over 90 minutes of play. His counterpart, David Callahan, picked up four saves and earned the win.
Total shots for the two teams were close as the Tornadoes held a slim 13-11 advantage on the evening.
Waynesburg returns to action on Saturday when they travel to New Wilmington, Pa. to take on Westminster in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup. The game is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.
