LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 3) – The Waynesburg University battled hard and earned a 2-1 victory over Saint Vincent on Thursday afternoon as the second half of a men's/women's soccer double-header at Chuck Noll Field.
The victory was a huge pickup for the visiting team as it snapped a four-game losing streak that stretched back to Sept. 17.
The Yellow Jackets (4-7-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period when senior forward JC Danhires scored his team-high fourth goal of the year by pounding a rebound off of Bearcat goalkeeper Gabe Cooper into the net.
With the score remaining 1-0 until halftime, the Jackets extended their advantage to 2-0 at the 72:51 mark of the contest when Ryan Gaudy posted his second score of the season after the ball was bobbled by Cooper.
After falling behind 2-0, the host Bearcats (4-8) got back into the contest at the 82:19 mark with a goal by Dave Lauteri, but the Jackets were able to stand tall and hold on for the win.
Waynesburg senior goalkeeper Brad Davis had a tremendous game in net as he made 13 saves over 90 minutes of work to get the victory.
Davis was very busy all day as Saint Vincent out-shot the Yellow Jackets by a 24-10 margin.
After getting back onto the winning track, Waynesburg returns home on Saturday, Oct. 4, to battle the Mountain Cats of Pitt-Johnstown.
