Waynesburg women take one from Alfred

Yellow Jackets drop Saxons 71-55

Box Score

ALFRED
, N.Y.
(Dec. 29) – The Waynesburg women's basketball team scored at least 70 points for the third-straight game to knock off Alfred by the final score of 71-55.

It was the fourth win over their last five games by the Yellow Jacket women, who improved to 4-4 on the year. The loss dropped the Saxons to 5-2 and ended a three-game winning streak.

The Jackets jumped out to a 30-16 advantage at halftime, which was partially caused by some awful shooting by Alfred. The home team connected on just 16 percent of their first-period shots (5-31) and didn't make a three-pointer on eight tries. Waynesburg, meanwhile, hit on 10-of-24 attempts from the field (42 percent).

The Yellow Jackets struggled out of the gates as they fell behind by a 9-2 deficit after the first seven minutes of play. However, after head coach Sam Jones called a thirty-second timeout, his team came on strong, stringing together a 13-0 run to take a 15-9 lead.

During the scoring burst, five different Jackets put points on the board.

After they finally gave up a basket that trimmed their advantage to 15-11, Waynesburg rolled off an 8-0 run to increase their advantage to 23-11 with 2:51 to go in the first 20 minutes of play.

After halftime, the Yellow Jackets built their lead up to as many as 24 points (60-36) with 6:14 to go in the contest. Thanks to their early excellence, Jones was able to dig deeply into his bench and allow a number of his younger players some time on the court.

The victors saw a trio of their own reach double digits in the scoring column, led by the team's number one scorer Elisha Jones, who led the Jackets with 16 points. Freshmen Hannah Hunter and Callie White added 14 points a piece in the victory.

Junior Johnna Deco pulled down at least 10 rebounds for the fourth-straight game as she recorded a game-high 10 boards. Hunter added three steals on the night.

Alfred was led by senior guard Melanie Jackson, who poured in a game-best 19 points in a losing effort.

Waynesburg will stay in the Empire State for a contest with Nazareth College tomorrow. If the Jackets can beat the 3-2 Golden Flyers on Tuesday, it will be the first time that the Waynesburg women have won three games in a row since early in the 2005-2006 campaign. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
