Senior Tyler Altmeyer put together his best performance of the season after going 3-3 and placing sixth at the RIT Invitational.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Dec. 6) – Led by four place-winners, the Waynesburg University wrestling team tied for seventh place out of the 13 teams that competed at the Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T.) Invitational this past Saturday.
Leading the group was freshman 125-pounder Rico Borz, who dropped his first match of the event before bouncing back and winning five bouts in the consolation round. In the third-place bout, Borz hung right with third-seeded Tyler Savage of Notre Dame College (Ohio), before giving up a three-point move in the closing seconds of the bout that ended with a 5-1 score.
During his five-bout winning streak, Borz picked up his first fall of the year, pinning Chris Stobie of Morrisville in 3:55.
Senior Tyler Altmeyer stepped in and had a productive day at 133 pounds, going 3-3 as the sixth seed, and picking up a fall on his way to finishing sixth.
At 197 pounds, first-year grappler Corbin Semple made it to the championship semifinals, before to the number two-seed in the tournament, Oswego State's Joel Ford, and dropping into consolations.
There, the Waynesburg native advanced to the third-place bout, but dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to Joe Silverman of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and had to settle for fourth.
Last, but not least, junior heavyweight Melvin Warrick picked up a fifth-place finish after going 2-2.
Several other Waynesburg wrestlers had strong performances on the day, including sophomore 141-pounder, Pat McCabe, who went 2-2 with a pin-fall victory; freshman 149-pounder Garrett Johnston, who went 2-2; freshman 157-pounder Jared Roberts, who went 2-2 with a pin and a technical fall; and junior heavyweight Rich Janicki, who went 2-2.
Notre Dame, an NAIA school, won the event with a total of 167.5 points. They were followed by Oswego State (95) and John Carroll (92.5) in the top three. The Jackets finished tied with Wesleyan, as both teams racked up 60 points.
Waynesburg will have a week off before heading to Ada, Ohio to compete in the Ohio Northern Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 13.
