ADA, Ohio (Feb. 27) – The Waynesburg University men's wrestling team traveled to the NCAA Division III Region 4 Championships, which were hosted by Ohio Northern University, on Friday. Despite taking a tough loss, junior
Jessie Orbin (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) stayed alive for day two of the event and a spot in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
Orbin opened his day at 174 pounds with a pin in 3:37 over Washington & Jefferson's John Starusko. The two-time Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champion was tied with his next opponent, Ohio Northern's Jack Hoffman, heading into the third period of their quarterfinal bout. Unfortunately, Hoffman picked up an escape and a takedown to advance to the semifinals.
The loss, which was Orbin's first since Dec. 6, seemed to only motivate the 100-match winner, as he recorded a 15-0 technical fall (5:36) over Southern Virginia's Tanner Glatras to advance to day two, where he will need to win three-straight bouts to finish third and punch his ticket to nationals.
Though he didn't advance to day two, sophomore
AJ Tomaino (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) put together a respectable tournament at 184 pounds. After dropping his opening bout, Tomaino rebounded with a pin in 2:56 over Randolph's Colton Webster and a second-straight fall over Kaden Duke of Hiram (1:59). A loss in his next match gave Tomaino a 2-2 performance.
Baldwin Wallace currently leads the team race with 120.5 points. Roanoke is close behind in second with 119.5. Waynesburg is in 16
th place with 14.5 points. Saturday's action is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m.
