ALTOONA, Pa. (Sept. 2) – Thanks in large part to a spectacular header goal by freshman David Floyd, the Waynesburg men's soccer team earned a double-overtime tie with Penn State Altoona on Tuesday night.
Floyd's goal, his first on the year, came off a throw-in by junior Nick Munnell at 86:22 of regulation time. The tie ran the Yellow Jackets' record to 1-1-1.
Things started out well for the Lions (0-2-1) as they scored the game's first two goals. Geremy Graham buried the game's first tally when the ball deflected off of Waynesburg senior keeper, Brad Davis.
Altoona jumped out to a 2-0 lead at 64:30 when Richard Hopewell scored an insurance point.
Waynesburg got back into the game at 78:46 when senior JC Danhires scored off an assist by junior Mike DeAngelis.
In goal, Davis stopped two-of-four shots and worked all 110 minutes in the game.
After being out-shot 16-9 in regulation, the Yellow Jackets turned up the heat on Lions goalie, Chris Bolea as they peppered him with seven shots over the two overtimes. Penn State-Altoona managed just one shot over the same time period.
The Yellow Jackets play their fourth-straight road game on Wednesday, Sept. 3, when they travel to Ohio to take on Franciscan University at 5:30 p.m.
