CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. (Jan. 3) – The Waynesburg women faced a stiff test on Saturday afternoon when they traveled all the way to Kentucky to take on Thomas More, the number four-ranked team in the country.
The Yellow Jackets battled hard, but couldn't handle the Saints' size advantage as they dropped a 70-45 decision. The loss was Waynesburg's first in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, sending them to 2-1 in the PAC and 4-6 overall. TMC improved to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in conference action.
Thomas More held a huge advantage in the paint, out-scoring Waynesburg 34-8 and out-rebounding the visiting team 38-29. Sophomore center Nicole Dickman spearheaded the effort down low by recording a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Shooting struggles hampered the Jackets' chances at scoring an upset, as they hit on just 30 percent of their shots (15-of-50) from the floor. TMC shot 48 percent (24-of-50) on the day.
The biggest bright spot for Waynesburg was freshman forward Callie White, who continued her stellar first year of college ball by tallying 15 points and eight rebounds, both of which were game-high totals for the Jackets. Sophomore forward Elisha Jones chipped in eight on the day.
Last year's PAC Player of the Year, senior guard Jayme Thiem, poured in a game-best 20 points to pace the victors.
The Jackets will try to get back on the winning track on Wednesday when they return home to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse following three long road trips on Wednesday, Jan. 7, to take on PAC rival Westminster.
The game is scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
